itssnotreallyabbi asked: hey perv i know a lot of people [yourself included] have been criticizing jay and kanye for rapping about indulgence and all that. but dont you think it would be worse if they started being all "conscience" and trying to talk about "the struggle" and a life they clearly dont live? i mean look at t.i. he's always trying to salvage his street cred while living in the suburbs and making loads of money. he looks kinda silly to me.
You don’t have to be poor to make music about struggle. Marvin Gaye was rich when he made “What’s Going On” and its considered one of the best socially conscious songs of all time.
We’re not asking Jay & Kanye to pretend they’re poor, we’re just saying it’s unfortunate that they don’t even acknowledge what the country is going through in their lyrics. They have blinders on and I think they’re getting more and more out of touch with the common person.
Since the recession started 4 years ago, the income gap between blacks and whites has widened.. so that makes it funny when you say “What’s 50 grand to a nigga like me, can you please remind me”, knowing that your core audience is getting poorer by the year.
This is a completely different situation than T.I. because T.I. is pushing a tough guy image like he still hits the block in Bankhead. Jay-Z and Kanye have never been the type of artists to claim they were still in the streets even though they were rich.
